原文
有物混成，先天地生。寂兮寥兮，独立而不改，周行而不殆，可以为天地母。吾不知其名，强字之曰道，强为之名曰大。大曰逝，逝曰远，远曰反。
故道大，天大，地大，人亦大*。域中有四大，而人居其一焉。
人法地，地法天，天法道，道法自然。

有一个混然天成的东西，存在于天地产生之前。它无声无形，独立自在，永不改变，循环运行，永不衰竭。称得上是天地万物的母亲。我不知道它的名字，勉强命名它为[道]，勉强给它起个名字叫 "（伟）大"。伟大，无边无际，而运行不息，运行不息而越行越远，越行越远而回返本原。
所以道伟大，天伟大，地伟大，人也伟大。宇宙中四个伟大的，人是其中之一。
人要尊从地的法则，地要尊从天的法则，天要尊从道的法则，道的法则就是自然法则。

It is a complex and obscure being which existed before heaven and earth. Oh how still it is! Oh how it is virtual! It subsists alone and never changed. It moves periodically and never slows down. It may be the mother of the universe.
I don't know its name. If I should give it a title, I call it Tao. If I should give it a name, I call it Great. Great Tao is constantly moving. By moving, it goes far. Once away, it comes back.
This is why the Tao is great, heaven is great, earth is great, and mankind is great too.
In the universe, there are four great things, and mankind is one of them.
Mankind follows earth; earth follows heaven; heaven follows the Tao; the Tao follows the nature.

Il est un être complexe et obscur qui existait avant le ciel et la terre.
O qu'il est calme ! O qu'il est virtuel !
Il subsiste seul et ne change point.
Il circule périodiquement et ne faiblit point.
Il peut être regardé comme la mère de l'univers.
Moi, je ne sais pas son nom.
Pour lui donner un titre, je l'appelle Voie (Tao).
En m'efforçant de lui faire un nom, je l'appelle Grand.
Grand (Tao) meut sans cesse.
En mouvant sans cesse, il s’éloigne.
Une fois éloigné, il revient.
C'est pourquoi le Tao est grand, le ciel est grand, la terre est grande, l’Homme aussi est grand.
Dans l'univers, il y a quatre grandes choses, et l’Homme en est une.
L'Homme respecte la terre ; la terre respecte le ciel ; le ciel respecte le Tao ; le Tao respecte la nature.
