原文
视之不见，名曰夷；听之不闻，名曰希；搏之不得，名曰微。此三者不可致诘，故混而为一。其上不曒，其下不昧。绳绳兮不可名，复归于无物。是谓无状之状，无物之象，是谓惚恍。迎之不见其首，随之不见其后。
执古之道，以御今之有。能知古始，是谓道纪。

看它看不见，叫做"夷（无色）"；听它听不到，叫做"希（无声）"；摸它摸不着，叫做 "微（无形）"。这三者的情况，不可探讨追究，本来它们就是混而为一的。它的上部不明显，它的下部不昏暗。绵绵不绝难以形容，又回归于无形无象的状态。他是没有状态的状态，没有物体的形象，可以说是恍恍惚惚。迎面看，不见它的头，随后跟，又看不见它的背。
坚持自古以来就存在的道，就可以把握今天的万物。能认识宇宙的由来始末，这就是道的纲领。

You look at it (the Tao) and you don't see it: it is said to be colorless. You listen to it and you don't hear it: It is said soundless. You want to touch it and you don't reach it: it is said to be intangible.
These three qualities cannot be explained using words. This is why we merge them into one.
Its upper part is not bright; its lower part is not obscure. It is eternal and cannot be named. Then it returns to the state without appearance nor shape.
It is a state without form, an image without a body. It is vague and indeterminate. If you face it you do not see its face; if you follow it, you do not see its back.
By keeping the Tao of ancient times, we can master the present. If we can know the origin of ancient things, we hold the thread of the Tao.

Vous le regardez (le Tao) et vous ne le voyez pas : on le dit incolore.
Vous l'écoutez et vous ne l'entendez pas : on le dit aphone.
Vous voulez le toucher et vous ne l'atteignez pas : on le dit incorporel.
Ces trois qualités ne peuvent être expliquées à l'aide de la parole. C'est pourquoi on les confond en une seule.
Sa partie supérieure n'est point éclairée ; sa partie inférieure n'est point obscure.
Il est éternel et ne peut être nommé. Puis il retourne à l’état sans apparence ni forme.
On l'appelle un état sans forme, une image sans corps.
Il est vague, indéterminé.
Si vous allez au-devant de lui, vous ne voyez point sa face ; si vous le suivez, vous ne voyez point son dos.
C'est en respectant le Tao des temps anciens qu'on peut gouverner les existences d'aujourd'hui.
Si l'homme peut connaître l'origine des choses anciennes, on dit qu'il tient le fil du Tao.
