原文
天下皆谓我大，似不肖。夫唯大，故似不肖。若肖，久矣其细也。
夫我有三宝，持而宝之。一曰慈，二曰俭，三曰不敢为天下先。
慈故能勇；俭故能广；不敢为天下先，故能成器长。
今舍慈且勇；舍俭且广；舍后且先；死矣！
夫慈以战则胜，以守则固。天将救之，以慈卫之。

天下人都对我说，[道]太大，似乎没有什么东西与它相像。正因为他太伟大，才不与任何东西相像。如果[道]与某物相像，那么[道]也就太渺小了。
我有三件宝贝，我一直持有并珍藏着它们。一是慈爱，二是节俭，三是不敢处于天下人的前面。
有了慈爱，才能勇武，有了节俭才能大方；不敢处于天下人的前面，才能成为世间万物的统领。
如今抛弃了慈爱去逞英勇，抛弃了节俭去显大方，抛弃了退让而抢先，结果是走向死亡！
有慈爱，用于作战就能取胜，用于防守一定坚不可摧。上天要拯救谁，就以慈爱来保护他。

Everyone in the world tells me that my Tao is great. But it doesn't look like anything. It's only because it's very great that it doesn't look like anything. If it looked like something, it would have become small a long time ago!
I have three treasures: I hold them and cherish them. The first is called affection; the second is called thrifty; the third is called humility which prevents me from wanting to be the first in the empire.
I have affection, that's why I can be courageous. I have economy, that's why I can be generous. I do not dare to be the first of the empire, that is why I can become the leader of all people.
But today some persons would be brave without affection, would be generous without economy; would compete the first place without humility. This is what leads to death.
With a heart full of affection, if we fight, we win the battle, if we uphold a fort, it is impregnable.
When heaven wants to save a man, it gives him affection to protect him.

Dans le monde tous me disent que mon Tao est grand. Mais il ne ressemble à rien.
C'est uniquement parce qu’il est grand qu’il ne ressemble à rien.
S’il ressemblait à quelque chose, il y a longtemps qu’il serait devenu petit !
Je possède trois trésors : je les tiens et les chérie.
La première s'appelle l'affection ; la seconde s'appelle l'économie ; la troisième s'appelle l'humilité, qui m'empêche de vouloir être le premier de l'empire.
J'ai de l'affection, c'est pourquoi je puis être courageux.
J'ai de l'économie, c'est pourquoi je puis être généreux.
Je n'ose être le premier de l'empire, c'est pourquoi je puis devenir le chef de tous les hommes.
Mais aujourd'hui on laisse l'affection mais on s'adonne au courage ; on laisse l'économie mais on se livre à de grandes dépenses ; on laisse l’humilité mais on cherche à être le premier :
Voilà ce qui conduit à la mort.
Avec un cœur rempli d'affection, si l'on combat on remporte la victoire, si l'on défend (une ville), elle est inexpugnable.
Quand le ciel veut sauver un homme, il lui donne l'affection pour le protéger.
