原文
治人事天，莫若啬。
夫为啬，是谓早服；早服谓之重积德；重积德则无不克；无不克则莫知其极；莫知其极，可以有国；有国之母，可以长久；是谓深根固柢，长生久视之道。

君王治理百姓奉行天道，没有比节俭收敛更好的方法了。
人们注意节俭收敛，是为了提前有所准备；早作准备，就是 注重积累节俭的“功德”；注重积累节俭的“功德”，就无往而不胜；无往而不胜的人，就具备了无可估量的能力；具备了无可估量的能力的人，就可以担负起治理国家的重任；有了治理国家的根本方略，国运就可以长久。这就叫做根深蒂固，是维持国运长久的道理。

To govern men and serve Heaven, nothing compares to a thrifty attitude. Saving money is an act of foresight. When he is far-sighted, we can say that he accumulates abundantly virtue. When he accumulates abundantly virtue, there is nothing he cannot overcome.
When he can overcome everything, no one knows his limits. When no one knows his limits, he can own the kingdom. Whoever masters the method of governance of the kingdom can survive for a long time.
This is called having deep roots and a strong stem. This is the art of surviving for a long time.

Pour gouverner les hommes et servir le ciel, rien n'est comparable à une attitude économe.
Faire des économies est un acte de prévoyance.
Quand il est prévoyant, on peut dire qu'il accumule abondamment de la vertu.
Quand il accumule abondamment de la vertu, il n'y a rien dont il ne peut triompher.
Quand il peut triompher de tout, personne ne connaît ses limites.
Quand personne ne connaît ses limites, il peut posséder le royaume.
Celui qui possède la mère (la méthode de gouvernance) du royaume peut subsister longtemps.
C'est ce qu'on appelle avoir des racines profondes et une tige solide.
Voilà l'art d’avoir une existence durable.
