Chapitre 41
原文
上士闻道，勤而行之。中士闻道，若存若亡。下士闻道，大笑之。不笑不 足以为道。
故建言有之：
明道若昧，进道若退，夷道若类，上德若谷，大白若辱，广德若不足，建德若偷，质真若渝，大方无隅，大器晚成，大音希声，大象无形。
道隐无名。夫唯道，善贷且成。

优秀的人听了道的教诲以后，勤勉地遵行。一般的人听了道的教诲以后，或记得或遗忘。俗陋的人听了道的教诲以后，大声嘲笑。假如道的教诲不被这种人嘲笑，反倒不足以成为真道。
所以古时立言的人说过这样的话：
光明的路好似暗昧；前进的路好似倒退；平坦的路好似崎岖；崇高的美德好似峡谷；最洁白的东西好似有黑垢；宽广的美德好似不足；刚健的美德好似懒惰；质朴而纯真好像污浊；最方正的东西没有棱角；最完美的器皿总是最后完成；最美丽的韵律声响小；最大的物象没有形状。
道幽隐而无名无声。只有道才能帮助一切，成就万物。

When thoughtful hear about the Tao, they practice it zealously. When ordinary people hear about the Tao, sometimes they remember it, sometimes they forget it. When thoughtless people hear about the Tao, they make jokes about it. It wouldn't deserve the name of Tao if they didn't make jokes about it.
This is why the ancients said:
The royal road seems obscure. The way forward looks like a way back. The plain way seems winding. The man of higher virtue is like a valley. The man of great purity is as if covered with opprobrium. The man of great merit appears to be incapacitated. The man of solid virtue seems full of laziness. The sober and honored man appears vile and degraded.
A perfect square lacks corners; a great vase is finished late; a great voice is barely heard; a great image is devoid of shape !
The Tao is hiding and no one can notice it. But only the Tao can help everybody and lead them to success.

Quand les hommes supérieurs ont entendu parler du Tao, ils le pratiquent avec zèle.
Quand les hommes du second ordre ont entendu parler du Tao, tantôt ils s’en souviennent, tantôt ils l’oublient.
Quand les hommes inférieurs ont reçu l’enseignement du Tao, ils le tournent en dérision. S'ils ne le tournaient pas en dérision, il ne mériterait pas le nom de Tao.
C'est pourquoi les anciens disaient :
La voie royale semble obscure.
La voie qui permet d’avancer ressemble à un chemin de retour.
La voie tout plate semble sinueuse.
L'homme d'une vertu supérieure est comme une vallée.
L'homme d'une grande pureté est comme couvert d'opprobre.
L'homme d'un mérite immense paraît frappé d'incapacité.
L'homme d'une vertu solide paraît frappé de paresse.
L'homme sobre et vrai paraît vil et dégradé.
Un grand carré parfait manque d’angles ; un grand vase est achevé tardivement; une grande voix dont le son est imperceptible ; une grande image dont on n'aperçoit point la forme !
Le Tao se cache et personne ne peut le remarquer.
Mais il n’y a que le Tao qui peut aider les êtres et les conduire au succès.
