29
将欲取天下 而为之,吾见其不得已。天下神器,不可为也,不可执也。为者败之,执者失之。
故物或行或随;或嘘或吹;或强或羸;或载或隳。
是以圣人去甚,去奢,去泰。
If a man tries to rule the empire with constraint, I think that he will not succeed.
Empire is something divine which man cannot force, and cannot restrain. If he forces it, he fails; if he restrains it, he loses it.
Among all beings of the world, some walk in front and some follow; some have slow breaths and some fast; some are strong and some weak; some are fearful and some are adventurers.
So a wise soul avoids extremes, extravagances, and excesses.
