Chapter

24

跂者不立;跨者不行;自见者不明;自是者不彰;自伐者无功;自矜者不长。
其于道也,曰:馀食赘形。物或恶之,故有道者不处也。

The one who stands on his tiptoes cannot stand for long. The one who walks in leaps and bounds cannot go far. The one who shows off is not enlightened. The one who is opinionated is not clairvoyant. The one who boasts has no merit. The one who glorifies himself cannot last long.
Such behavior is to the Tao, as garbage is to food or a hideous goiter to the body, which inspires only disgust.
This is why a follower of the Tao avoids it.
