16

致虚极,守静笃。万物并作,吾以观复。
夫物芸芸,各复归其根。归根曰静,静曰复命。复命曰常,知常曰明。不知常,妄作凶。
知常容,容乃公,公乃全*,全乃天,天乃道,道乃久,没身不殆。

Reaching absolute emptiness; maintaining extreme quietude; As all beings in the world are born and grow, I examine their evolution.
After being in a flourishing state, each of them returns to their origin. Returning to one's origin is called being at rest. Being at rest is called coming back to life. Coming back to life is called the Way of nature. Knowing the Way of nature is called being enlightened.
Whoever does not know the Way of nature abandons himself to disorder and attracts misfortune.
Whoever knows the Way of nature has a generous soul. The one who has a generous soul is righteous. The one who is righteous becomes complete. The one who is complete follows the Way of heaven.
To follow the Way of heaven means to follow the Tao. The one who follows the Tao endures long time; until the end of his life, he has nothing to fear.
