Chapter

13

Man dreads favor as well as disgrace, because he weighs the great calamity equal to his body.
What does it mean by one dreads favor as well as disgrace? The favor is reserved for low valets. So one fears to get it, as well to lose it. This is why it is said: man dreads favor as well as disgrace.
What does it mean by he weighs the great calamity equal to his body? If we experience great calamities, it is because we have a body. When we no longer care a body, what calamities might we experience?
This is why, when a man devotes his body to the empire, we can entrust him with the empire; when he loves the empire more than his body, we can give him the care of the empire.
