五色令人目 盲,五音令人耳聋,五味令人口爽,驰骋畋猎,令人心发狂,难得之货,令人行妨。
是以圣人为腹不为目,故去彼取此。
The five colors blunt one’s eyes; the five musical notes deafen one’s hearing; the five flavors dull one’s taste. Racing and hunting mislead one’s heart; rare goods lead man to commit crimes.
So a wise soul takes care of his stomach and does not try to satisfy his eyes. That is why he gives up the superficial and keeps the substantial.
